Whitchurch Heritage Mill Trail, Whitchurch, Hampshire

The Heritage Mill Trail in Whitchurch, Hampshire features five historic water mills, including Fulling Mill, Silk Mill, Town Mill, Bere Mill and Laverstoke Mill. Three of the mills on the Mill Trail are now residential properties.

4. Town Hall
The Regency Town Hall is a grade II*
listed building and the meeting place of
Whitchurch Town Council.
1. Whitchurch Silk Mill

building built in 1815. It is the oldest working 
Silk Mill still in its original building.
3. All Hallows
Church
All Hallows Church, Whitchurch, Hampshire, Illustration Replacing the original Saxon ‘white church’,
parts of the current building date from the
12th century. The Gothic Revival spire was
added to the Norman tower in the 1860s.
5. Bere Mill
In the 18th century it became the first
mill to produce paper for the Bank of England
bank notes. In the 1700s the surrounding fields were laid
out as water meadows and the structures are still intact.
9. Clapper Copse
Ancient semi natural broadleaf woodland,
a Site of Interest in Nature Conservation
2. Fulling Mill
A grade II listed building where the cleaning
of wool was carried out when sheep grazing
and the weaving of cloth was the predominant
local industry.
8. Freefolk
The settlement of Freefolk is small but
ancient; its name is thought to relate to it being a
free settlement outside of the feudal system.
6. St Nicholas Church
Founded in 1265, this grade 1 listed building
remains in use and is cared for by
the Churches Conservation Trust
7. Laverstoke Mill
A grade II listed former paper mill
and now the distillery and visitor centre
for Bombay Sapphire gin.

1. Whitchurch Silk Mill

A grade II* listed building built in 1815. It is the oldest working Silk Mill still in its original building.


2. Fulling Mill

A grade II listed building where the cleaning of wool was carried out when sheep grazing and the
weaving of cloth was the predominant local industry.

From the Railway Station

Turn left along Station Road and at the junction with Newbury Road turn right and continue downhill to the Town Square. To complete the longer walk to Laverstoke, continue ahead to the Silk Mill and follow the instructions shown below.

Whitchurch is located 13 miles South of Newbury and 12 miles North of Winchester.

The Little Chapel is located on Winchester Street, just a short walk from the Silk Mill. If you are heading towards the centre of town, the little chapel is on the left hand side of the road.
